Common newcomer questions
What if I’ve never paddled before?
No experience is required to join. The only requirement is that you must be able to swim and pass a swimming test.
What kind of shape should I be in?
All are welcome. It would be ideal if you are involved in other sports and have a high level of strength, flexibility, and endurance, however, many people come to us with no athletic experience. Again, you must be able to swim and pass a swimming test.
Are there age restrictions
We have paddlers of all ages from keiki (children) to kūpuna (seniors). Generally those up to the age of 18 paddle together, as do adults. Keiki crews are often grouped by age, while adult crews are based on years of experience.
What should I wear?
Paddling is an ocean sport. Most paddlers prefer to wear lightweight type of clothing such as, surf shorts, leggings, or bike shorts or dri-fit type of material. Wear clothing that is lightweight, can get wet and will not hinder your ability to swim if you need to. Wearing sunscreen (Reef safe) is encouraged and bring your own water.
Do I need a paddle?
No, the club provides paddles during practice and for regatta races. However, those who commit to the season may want their own paddle. Paddlers who steer may want their own steering blade. Check with your coach to see what type of paddle they recommend and the best place to purchase.

More frequently asked questions
These questions apply to pre-season and regatta season paddling from March to August.
What if I want to try it before committing to join?
A Makaha registration form and HCRA waiver must be filled out prior to participating. Try it for a week, see how you like it before committing.
What if I can’t come until May or June?
Membership is ongoing throughout the season for crews that are not filled. If you start the season midway through, you may not be able to race immediately upon enrollment. Safety is a #1 priority; some people learn quickly, and others take more time. If you are a quick learner there is a chance you will race.
When are practices?
Weekdays and sometimes on the weekends. Practice Schedule varies according to weather and ocean conditions. Coaches will set practice schedules ahead of time and adjust accordingly. Coaches will notify all paddlers/parents regarding practice schedules. Information is also listed on this Sports App.
Who is my coach?
Coach assignments are listed on this Sports App and will be given when you sign up.
How do I know what bracket I qualify to race in?
If you are under 18, you paddle in your age group.
Do my dues have to be paid in full before I can practice?
No, but a deadline will be set by the Board prior to races of when dues must be paid. Dues must be paid no later than that deadline given.
What if I’ll be missing practices or be going on vacation this summer?
Be sure to communicate with your coach about missed practices or travel plans. If you will be away for a good portion of the summer, you may want to consider waiting until next season to paddle.
How long are practices?
Approximately an hour to 90 minutes.
When are the races?
Regatta races are held on Sundays, with the State race on the first Saturday in August.
How much does it cost?
Dues total $145 for the regatta season. This includes use of the equipment and coaching and covers the HCRA and OHCRA registration fees, race entry fees, club shirts, upkeep and repairs of equipment, as well as administrative fees.
Is it safe?
Safety is our #1 priority and coaches will never knowingly or intentionally put paddlers in danger! As with any sport, accidents can happen. Do your best to prevent accidents by paying attention, listen to your coaches’ instructions, and stay alert by being aware of your surroundings during practices.
What does the club expect from me?
Refer to our youth criteria regarding paddling expectation. Participate in all fundraisers, assist at races; set up/break down, carry canoe before and after each crew practice/race and abide by our clubs’ code of conduct. Contribute in positive ways to the club.
