Lei Contest

The Mākaha Canoe Club is excited to host a lei contest on May 2, 2026. Participants are invited to showcase their creativity and craftsmanship by entering their handmade lei into the competition.

Rules

  • All lei must be between 24-25 inches in length (open ended, untied), with a 2-inch tie at both ends.
  • Lei must be made from all organic/natural materials, except for the string portion, which may be non-organic.

Entry Requirements

Please email your intent to compete to makahacc2012@gmail.com with the participant's name, contact information and age division.

  • Each participant may submit up to two lei in the same category.
  • Lei must be submitted on the day of the contest between 4-5pm (at Mākaha Valley Country Club) prior to the start of judging at 6pm.  “Crowd Favorite” will be judged by the community and votes will be in by 7:15p.

Divisions

  • Division 1: Ages 18 and up
  • Division 2: Ages 12 to 17
  • Division 3: Ages 5-11

Judging Categories

Each age division will have a blue ribbon winner for each of the following categories

  • Lei Nani o Makaha 
  • Lei Nō Hanakeoki (Mākaha Canoe Club's trademark colors of purple and white)

Important Notes

  • Any lei not meeting the stated requirements will be disqualified.
  • Decisions by the judges are final.
  • There will also be a winner overall as we let the community vote on the “Crowd Favorite.”
  • Any lei not picked up between 8p – 8:30p will be placed on Israel Kamakawiwa’ole’s statue in front of Waianae Satellite City.
