History

Mākaha Canoe Club has served families along the Waianae coast for over 50 years. It was founded in 1971 by community members from within the Waianae moku-the Naone, Abad, Dutro, and Lum Ho ‘ohana. Our mission has always been to perpetuate and promote Hawaiian culture and traditions through the ancient sport of canoe paddling while providing a healthy activity for keiki and families in our community.

In that same year, Makaha Canoe Club was blessed to purchase the koa canoe Hanakeoki from the Outrigger Canoe Club for $1,500.00. To this day, Hanakeoki has been the beacon of the club, always calling families back to paddle, and or just to come visit and say aloha!

Code of Conduct

At Makaha Canoe Club, we strive to promote and provide for the member, paddler, family and community the sport of Hawaiian canoe paddling, ocean-related activities, a sense of family within the community in conjunction with the ocean. We put education of safety, respect, and knowledge of the ocean and equipment first and uphold the values represented by the word “Aloha”

  • O ‘Olu‘olu – Agreeable, expressed with pleasantness
  • H Ha‘aha‘a – Humility, expressed with modesty
  • A Ahonui – Patience, expressed with perseverance

Makaha Canoe Club encourages the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of canoe paddling. Our Code of Conduct has been created as a guideline of expected behavior for MCC members & their ohana (when in attendance) by representing the club with pride, respect & by being pono during all sanctioned OHCRA & HCRA activities. An atmosphere of caring and being responsible is expected at all MCC practices and functions.

The following will be considered violations of the MCC Code of Conduct:

  1. Discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, age, gender, national origin or sexual orientation.
  2. Bullying, defined as “the severe or repeated use of an oral, written, electronic or physical act or gesture directed at any other member which causes physical or emotional harm to another member or damage to another member’s property, disrupts training or club activities or creates a hostile environment for members including OHCRA, Hui Waa & HCRA members during sanction activities.
  3. Sexual misconduct.
    1.  Any act of sexual harassment or unwelcome sexual advances or inappropriate oral, written, visual or physical conduct of a sexual nature by executive board, board members, coaches or members of the club in connection with any MCC related activity.
    2.  Any sexual contact, advance or inappropriate communication (such as provocative text messages) between a coach and adult paddler (except pre-existing relationships) during the time an athlete/coach relationship exists. Many of us met our partners at paddling, however coaches dating paddlers disrupts the dynamics of a team. Wait until the season is over.
  4.  Excessive profanity during practice, races or Makaha CC functions.
  5.  Any obscene language, gesture or threatening language or physical violence directed toward another MCC member or at a MCC function.
  6.  Any obscene language, gesture or threatening language or physical violence directed towards an official or a competitor at any paddling event.
  7.  The use of; or being under the influence of alcohol/illicit drugs during practice, race site, during a regatta or distance race is not permitted.
  8. Any act of fraud, deception or dishonesty in connection with any Makaha Canoe Club activity.

Members of Makaha Canoe Club may be placed on probation, suspended or expelled from Makaha Canoe Club for violations of the Code of Conduct.

*MCC’s Code of Conduct cannot be made to cover every situation. If situations arise that are not covered, in the course of deliberating, considerations will be given to the following:

  • Does the proposed penalty match the seriousness of the offense(s)?
  • Would most people agree the proposed penalty is fair?
